SMOKE DETECTOR TECHNOLOGY AND   THE
INVESTIGATION OF FATAL FIRES
It has a very good explanation on the difference in technologies.  It was originally
published in the IAAI Magazine in May of 2000.

CONSUMER ALERT - Smoke Alarms Fail
Read about several court cases including a five hundred million dollar class action
law-suit against the smoke detector industry. Read extracts from several TV
documentaries and articles about fire deaths resulting from ineffective smoke
alarms, the ones that are probably 'protecting' you and your family right now!

Why is it that your smoke alarms can go off when you burn the toast but may not
detect smoke in time to save you in a smouldering fire, the type that often kills?
Learn how fire-fighters, fire officials, fire engineers and consumer advocates have
been 'battling the system' for decades, trying (unsuccessfully) to make your home
and family safe from fire.

Underwriter's Laboratories, the world's largest product certification organization
testing of ionization smoke alarms comes under fire. Read what Fire Chiefs and
high level government officials have to say about UL's inadequate smoke alarm
testing procedures.

WHAT SHOULD FIRE-FIGHTERS BE TELLING THE PUBLIC?
This report, written by a special committee of senior American Fire Chiefs advises
Fire Chiefs how to respond when asked: "...which detector to buy, how many ...
should an ionization, photoelectric, gas or heat detector be purchased?"
On page 5, under 'The Fire Chief's Recomendation' the report recomends a test to
demonstrate the dangerous problem with ionization alarms which resulted in the
Fire Chiefs stating that they could "...take no other course but to recomend the
installation of photoelectric [NOT ionization] detectors."

UL - Letters to Underwriter's Laboratories
World Fire Safety Foundation writes to UL
Underwriter's Laboratories (UL) is the world's largest Standards/Testing
organisation. It stamps its 'seal of approval' on over 19 billion products annually
and states that it has "set the entire foundation for product-safety certification."
For almost 30 years senior fire industry officials have requested that UL addresses
their inadequate testing procedures that allow dangerous ionization smoke alarms
to be 'certified as safe'.  The Foundation's letters addresses UL's alleged, seriously
flawed testing program.
The Foundation challenges the fire industry, the media, fire-fighters and especially
the public to read these letters and discover the root cause behind the global
problem with the type of alarms supposedly 'protecting' hundreds of millions of
families around the world.
