News Report in Burlington free Press St. Michael's College senior missing, feared drowned in rain-swollen Winooski River May 14, 2006 DUXBURY -- A St. Michael's College senior is missing and feared drowned after the canoe in which he was riding capsized on the rain-swollen Winooski River today. State Police identified the missing man as Augustine Carbunari, 20, of Watertown, Mass., a senior at St. Michael's. He is due to graduate from the Colchester college on Thursday. Police said Carbunari and another unidentified St. MIchael's student launched a canoe, and a third student launched a kayak below a power station on the Winooski River this afternoon. Shortly past 4 p.m., the canoe tipped over, and Carbunari and his fellow canoeist paddlers were dumped into the frigid river. The unidentified student was wearing a life jacket and made it to the riverbank, but Carbunari -- who was not wearing a life vest -- disappeared under the fast-moving water. Police have called off the search because of darkness and dangerous conditions. The search will resume Monday morning. |
