BARRE CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT
#8 South Main Street    Barre, Vermont
Started service in
- 1904      End Service in - 2005
The Barre City Fire Station was built in 1904.
Originally built with horse drawn engines, hay lofts,
and horse stables.   Over the years the station
evolved, however living and working in this station
was an experience that most will never forget.  The
history that surrounds you when you step in the front
door is amazing.   From the wood floors, the two
wood swinging main floor doors,  to the old ticker
tape alarm.  The window sills that still show the teeth
marks of the horse that once stabled there.   Hidden
engraved initials from firefighters long since gone.
Some have even felt or believe that ghosts roam the
hall ways at night..
This is the back or the fire station.   You can see the
bell tower to the right.  The ramp to the basement
may also be seen.  The white garage do was use for
many years.  Ambulances were backed in this door
between two fire trucks that were facing the front of
the station.   Many mirrors were lost over the years
due to the close quarters.

This picture is inside the station on the main floor. the
camera is looking from the back of the station toward
the front.
Things of interest - Wood floors,  Metal Plates were
placed on the floor that the trucks were driven on.
(Those metal plates kept the building standing for
many  years).
The bay doors are opened by springs
activated by a pull rope hanging from the ceiling.
Call- force gear rack is in the center of picture.
This picture is from the front of the station looking
toward the back.
Things of interest - Wood floors, Call force gear rack,
wooden over head ceilings
This is the day-time watch room or Radio room just of
the main floor.

Over the top of the radio panel is the ticker tape alarm
system for the street boxes and master boxes
through out the city.  The system has sence been
moved to the new fire station were it is still in service
protecting the City of Barre
This picture was taken outside the watch room.  The
panels above the door had numbers and names that
listed the Master box alarms, and street box alarms in
the City of Barre.  To the right is the Full time
firefighters gear.

The plastic was an attempt by the City to protect the
firefighters on duty from the CO build up after each
time a truck engine was started in side the building
(Yea Ok?....)
Kitchen on the second floor of the station.
Probably the original wall paper. Its also a place
that had many close calls that could have ended up
as 2nd or 3rd alarms.

(Howy - Woody)
One of three bunk rooms used by crews.  This room
happens to be the Officers bunk room.  Each officer
and each fire fighter had there own bed.
The Day room  or  Tv Room
Crews usually ate meals and watched TV here in the
evenings.
This was originally thedepartment meeting room /
Training Room.   In 2004 the department received a
grant for exercise equipment.  This space was the
easiest to change for a workout room.
This is a picture of the main hallway.
On the left are the lockers that firefighters were
assigned.   The wood work throughout the station was
incredible.
